The RedSky Location Information Server (LIS) provides automatic, real-time location determination, conveyance, and updates for IP endpoints. LIS capability is needed to enable location-based services of all types, including and especially emergency calling services. The RedSky LIS ensures that relevant back-end systems, like a VoIP Positioning Center (VPC), are updated in a timely fashion so that user location can be reliably determined and emergency services promptly dispatched to where they are needed. The RedSky LIS is architected in compliance with ATIS/ESIF, ETSI, IETF and NENA standards and provides a scalable, extensible platform for emergency and other location based services for all types of networks.
At its simplest, a LIS is a high-speed, high-reliability, high-capacity server that sits at the edge of access networks, or at the access-to-core network edge, and provides location determination, conveyance, storage and privacy protection services for user/device physical location information. LIS technology enables the promise of the mobile broadband Internet, while providing the capabilities required to migrate essential features, like emergency calling, from the traditional telephony world to the ::anywhere:: world of IP. The RedSky LIS represents the next essential step in providing basic, context-aware location services to the emerging Web 2.0 world.
