Comply with Kari's Law: E911 Made Easy

The compliance deadline for Kari’s Law is rapidly approaching.  February 16, 2020 is the line the FCC has drawn in the sand. But, what does this mean for your company, your customers, and the enterprise space in general?

First, compliance does not need to be difficult.  In fact, these changes in legislation came about because the FCC wanted to simplify E911 regulations.  For many years, the rules around E911 varied by state and type of establishment, which led to confusion.  Do I need an E911 solution across my entire company or just for my Illinois location? I am a small business; am I required to implement E911?  So to make E911 easy, the FCC adopted a Report and Order in August which established minimum E911 requirements for ALL enterprise spaces. Meaning, if you are wondering if Kari’s Law affects you or your customers, the answer is yes.  No matter what states your company operates out of, you will need to comply with Kari’s Law. No matter the size or type of establishment you are, you will need to comply with Kari’s Law.  

 

So, what is it that Kari’s Law requires?  There are two parts: Direct Dialing and Notification.  Direct Dialing simply means that your phone system must be able to directly dial to 9-1-1 without the addition of a prefix.  If you pick up the phone and dial 9-1-1, you must be connected to an emergency dispatcher. This is typically the responsibility of the manufacturer.  The notification requirement is why your organization will need to implement an E911 solution.

 

Kari’s Law states that your enterprise will need to provide an automatic notification to a front desk, security or administrative personnel about every 9-1-1 call that takes place from your network.  Additionally, the notification will need to provide specific information that a 9-1-1 call is occurring, the phone number that dialed 9-1-1, and the location of where the call was placed. This means that your communication system will need to provide both notification of a 9-1-1 call, as well as alert someone as to where that call is coming from within your enterprise.
