Maryland E911 Legislation

Maryland does not currently have E911 legislation in place for multi-line telephone system operators (MLTS).

Maryland has enacted Kari's Law: ECS operators must not require the dialing of any additional digits to access 911 as of December 31, 2017. H.B. 1080

While the need to comply with state E911 legislation is a prime motivator for adding E911 protection to IP, PBX and Centrex phone systems, it shouldn't be the only consideration. Estimates based on Department of Labor statistics indicate that more than 60 million Americans working in or visiting office buildings, office campuses, hospitals and government buildings do not have the same 911 protection that they have at home. Regardless of legislation in Maryland, the facts are clear that E911 saves lives and is an important component of a comprehensive safety plan.
